October

October has been full of learning in our classroom! In math we have started working on addition, subtraction, and shapes. We will keep practicing addition and subtraction facts all year. Please encourage your child to practice addition and subtraction at home. This is a stepping stone for second grade and beyond so it is important  that the students master them now.

We have been talking about character analysis during reading. We read The Three Billy Goats Gruff and talked about the different character traits of the Troll and the Big Billy Goat. We have also been reviewing visualizing while reading. The students did a great job picturing what they would feel, taste, smell, see, and hear if they were in the book.

We have also begun learning about when to use punctuation in our writing. Right now we are focusing on using periods and commas. We have talked a lot about using periods where we pause when talking.

In social studies we studied Christopher Columbus. We learned that the queen of Spain gave him money to travel, that he thought he had found a new way to India, and that he never actually made it to America. Next week we are going on a field trip to Amish Acres! During social studies time we will begin talking about how school and life in the past is different from our time period.
