What we
are learning in school:
Math: We continued working
with points and lines. Our class also began learning about shapes. We learned
that polygons are closed shapes, plane figures (flat), and have three or more
line segments.
Language
Arts: Students
learned how to compare and contrast when reading. Students practiced reading a
passage and answering questions as they compared and contrasted.
Math Facts
Third grade students will need to pass their 0,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 multiplication facts in order to go to honor roll this
quarter. Students in fourth and fifth grade are still struggling with their
multiplication facts and the third grade teachers are hoping that this will
help motivate students to memorize their facts in third grade. The fourth grade
teachers are requiring their students to know all of their math facts if they
wish to go to honor roll. We decided that we will start preparing students for
this challenge slowly and introduce memorization of harder facts throughout the
rest of the year.
Students should be practicing their math facts every night.
Six students have completed the math fact challenge so far! This quarter the 3,
4, and 6 facts are mixed together and not separated. This is to help ensure
that students know their math facts fluently.
ISTEP/IREAD
Please make sure your child is getting plenty of rest these
next few weeks as we complete the ISTEP and IREAD test. If students are well
rested, they will be able to think clearly when answering questions.
If your child missed a day of ISTEP last week, they will do
a makeup test this coming week.

When we were studying bar graphs, the students took a poll of their classmates and created their own bar graphs based on the information they received.
We spent some time learning about immigration this month. Several students from our class practiced a reader's theater about Kirsten, a girl who immigrates from Sweden. We went to the group room so they could share it with us from the stage.
Andrina's mom came to visit our classroom. She shared some Swiss bread and chocolate with us. She also read us a story from Switzerland. We really enjoyed having Andrina in our class. We learned a lot about Switzerland from her.
We shared a reader's theater with our first grade reading buddies.
We started learning about simple machines in science!
Miss Goshert's second graders read books they had written to us.
Our Valentine's Day party was a lot of fun!
Mrs. Hershberger came up with a craft/activity for us to do!
We learned about lines, points, and line segments in math.
Mason shared about his great-great-grandmother who immigrated to America. He had a passport and passenger list from her travels. It was very interesting!
